Grade Modification – Reduced Damage & Cost Savings

Case Study

A garage door manufacturer was experiencing a high rate of in-house handling damage while manufacturing pre-painted door skins. Interstate Steel Company’s VA/VE team worked with the appropriate customer and steel mill technicians to help develop a special grade of hot dip galvanized steel. The resulting grade was “stiffer” than the previous “soft” interstitial free grades while maintaining the stretching/elongation properties required for this application. Not only did this grade modification decrease in-house losses, the customer also noted that handling damage in the form of transportation claims were also reduced significantly. This one grade modification saved this company over $100,000 annually while also increasing their customer’s overall satisfaction with their product.
