Optimum Nesting Configurations – Lower Cost/Blank

Case Study

A leading manufacturer of HVAC and refrigeration compressors purchases dry lubed hot rolled circle blanks for various deep drawn compressor housing applications. VA/VE concepts were employed to determine the ideal combination of master coil width, die cavities and pitch to optimize the nesting of circle blanks during the blank stamping process. By purchasing wider master coils in combination with three-up and four-up nesting configurations, Interstate Steel Company was able to dramatically increase material utilization. Since material is a major cost component when mass producing sheet metal components, the efficient nesting of parts minimized the amount of scrap, increased production efficiencies and ultimately reduced the overall cost per blank saving our customer over $475K annually.
